Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform as part of a backup group.

The unit applies to those who are developing technical and interpersonal accompaniment skills on chosen instrument or voice. They play to complement the performance of soloists and blend with other group members.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare to perform backup accompaniments

1.1 Confirm performance venue with required personnel

1.2 Confirm lead and backup performance roles and expected performance outcomes with required personnel

1.3 Confirm that individual part in performance is within own technical and artistic ability

1.4 Develop and implement an individual practice plan to gain technical and musical skills and achieve required performance standard

1.5 Take direction from and give support to performers during rehearsals

1.6 Seek feedback on own rehearsal performance from required personnel, and adjust performance technique as required

2. Perform backup accompaniments

2.1 Apply instrumental or vocal techniques according to accompaniment requirements

2.2 Achieve required sound and balance between lead and backing players by listening to own and others’ performance, and adjust playing or singing and volume as required

2.3 Maintain own conduct and appearance required for performance context

2.4 Take and give cues and contribute to a cohesive performance

3. Evaluate performances

3.1 Discuss and evaluate feedback from performers in the performance

3.2 Evaluate own performance as a backup accompanist, and note areas for future improvement

3.3 Seek feedback on own performance from required personnel, and incorporate suggestions into strategies for improving own backup accompaniment skills

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • perform as a member of a backup accompaniment group on at least two occasions.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • maintain concentration and focus throughout performance
  • complete preparation for performing backup accompaniment, including:
  • confirming requirements
  • attending and contributing to rehearsals
  • perform to required standard, including:
  • monitoring and adjusting intonation, volume, balance, expression and nuance using listening skills.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • lead and backup accompaniment roles and performance conventions
  • technical and interpersonal skills needed by performers who provide backup accompaniment
  • accepted communication practices and conventions relating to accompaniment roles and performance feedback
  • instrumental techniques, beat patterns and rhythmic styles
  • common verbal and non-verbal cues used in a music performance context
  • issues and challenges that arise in context of performing backup accompaniment and strategies for overcoming them
  • strategies to evaluate own and group performance and respond to feedback.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • instruments, equipment and resources required to perform in a backup accompaniment
  • opportunities to perform backup accompaniment
  • venue with adequate space and acoustic qualities for performing accompaniments.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
